Special Recognition Dorothy L. Carter 50 Year Anniversary DKG Membership 1969-2019
“Be progressive. Keep up with the moving world while not discarding what in the old has value. Don’t cling to the old when its worth has passed. Don’t be a person so set in your views that nothing can change you.”
In the early 1900’s, founder Dr. Annie Web Blanton made this charge, which the life of Dot Carter epitomizes.
Her career in education spans 54 years at the high school and community college levels. Her community service centers around her church and extends to involvement in organizations including BPW (Business and Professional Women) and Toastmasters; being local precinct chief judge; and volunteering with Hospice and Family Food Basket. While she has received many awards for her accomplishments from various organizations, tonight we celebrate her contributions to The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
In 1969 Dot was initiated into Alpha Upsilon chapter in Asheboro where she became an active member both at the chapter and state level. Upon expansion, Dot became a charter member of Delta Nu until she moved to Sims and transferred her membership to Omicron. Her outstanding work at the state level led to her election as Eta State President in 1987. Her primary focus then and now is the first purpose of DKG,” To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship.” Throughout her membership she has crisscrossed North Carolina and the Southeast via car, phone, internet, and notes. Her ever expanding circle of friends consider her family.
Besides serving Eta State on committees as a member and frequently chair, Dot has served at the International level on the Scholarship Committee as both a member, then chair. At the last Southeastern Conference held in 2003 in North Carolina, Dot served as chair of the Steering Committee.
Presently Dot is a board member and chair of the Grants Committee of the NC DKG Educational Foundation. Quoting Dr. Judith Carlson, “Dot unites her committee members to thoughtfully study the applications and select the recipients with deep regard and meticulous study. She is such an asset to our Foundation Board and is so genuinely modest about her accomplishments. Her work has brought distinction to our foundation.”
In Omicron we know her as Dot – our friend and mentor. She has served as our President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Parliamentarian, chair of our Strategic Planning, chair of Rules, and membership consultant. Tonight, we recognize 50 years of service, dedication and accomplishments in DKG as we look forward with her guidance and leadership to many more. Thank you, Dot Carter, and congratulations.

Louise McLawhorn graduated from East Carolina in 1950 with a B.S. in Business and Office Occupations. While in college she was inducted into Pi Omega Pi, an honor Business Fraternity. Louise taught high school Business and Office Occupations for almost 40 years, 39 years in Greene County and 1 year in Pitt County! Her initiation into DKG-Omicron Chapter was on October 17, 1959...60 years ago! Until Louise went on "reserve status", she regularly attended Omicron meetings.
